As this community seems to have died, I've created another: writeonrice.

I've posted an exercise for this week. I hope to see all of you there!

Firefly Episode Guide [18 Sep 2005|12:33am]

[ mood | bouncy ]

So, a friend of mine (mamishka) wrote and published an episode guide to Joss Whedon's Firefly series. You can order copies from her directly, or from the publisher, via her website ( http://mediababe.org ). The main page has a link, or you can follow the 'What's New?' link, to order.

She's a slightly better deal than the publisher. They're selling them for $10.39 + $5 for shipping. She will be selling them for $15 each,
shipping included inside the US. International will cost a bit more.

Any books bought directly from her will also be signed.

I wonder what gone is,
when i lie alone in,
all that is black and dark,
minus the comforting gleam of
glowing stars,
dulled by years of futile wishes,
Gone is to be lost,
lost indefinitely,
without a hope of moss,
on the north side of the tree,
to wander forever,
in the underbrush of a road less taken,
frost in the moonlight,
and green light from the sun on the leaves,
don't dare stop to rest ,
because getting back up would be too hard,
wandering forever, to be gone,
gone...is maybe a single note in an orchestra,
chiming it's voice among the thunder of the masses,
a solitary whistle in the winds of a hurricane,
to be lost,
to be gone,
reality torn away,
to be swept into solitude, or
too much company to be heard in,
are you gone?

Is this community still alive and well? It appears that there is long intervals with no posts and not a whole lot of writing assignments recently passed out.

Namaste,

Um...hi. I feel kind of self-conscious being the first to respond. It turned into part romance/drama, which I've never tried--especially from a male POV--so tell me how it turned out. Also, I couldn't quite remember whether Brooklyn was part of Manhattan or not. Oh well, here goes.

(from not-quite-the-beginning)

"Ethan simply watched for a minute, smiled, and traced the path of the ballerina as she moved across the screen. It was an instructional dance video, one of many he'd gotten from an old friend at the university. The camera work was amazing. Crisp, clear shots of the girl, her perfectly fitting training outfit, and her feet--beautiful, with a recent pedicure not yet chipped or dirtied, and light pink toenails which glowed from the white mat on which she stood."

Writing Topic - Week 2 [06 Jul 2003|03:34pm]
atacuivel
[ mood | amused ]

Okay so I started writing a story for last week's topic but between my job and this philosophy paper I have to write, I didn't finish. But, like it says in the user info, when I'm done I'll backdate the entry to today so you can see how it's done. Also, don't be afraid to start a story for last week's topic now. It's about using the topics to jog your imagination, not being shackled to a specific topic.

I'm going to post topics on Sundays from now on because I think that's pretty much the start of the week. And I'm also experimenting with different sorts of assignments: last week was a bit of plot, this week I'm giving you a character; last week's was more developed, this week's is shorter and funnier. So tell me which kind of topic you like, etc.

Assignment:
Your main character is a Brooklyn violin teacher with a foot fetish.
That's all! Anything can happen to this character, and you can use any POV.

How to approach this week's assignment: This is meant to be an exercise in character development. I suggest you start out by writing out this character's personality and trying to get into their shoes (pun intended, haha) before putting them in plot situations. While you're working, take note: is this approach harder or easier for you? Does your character have a different quality than when you begin working on a story's plot first? Does the plot have a different quality? Does it move faster? Slower? If you feel like it, tell us about how well/badly this character-based approach worked for you.

Okay, here's my attempt at a comic monologue, and I hope you all enjoy, or tear it to shreds so that I can fix it. Either way, it should be a good time, right?

Alex, age 17

So today was the first day of driving school, right? And I’m there sitting in the corner because the rest of the room is filled with these freshman girls in track suits. It’s like they all decided to come out and blind me with those pink jacket things. And there’re some skinny guys in worn out jeans around me. They’re sort of just staring at the walls. Nobody’s next to me though. Who the hell wants to sit next to the seventeen year old with the lip ring? Not that I give a fuck. I’m just there to pass the test, right? Pretty much all I want is for the lady in the front to shut the hell up about turn signals. The lecture was just painful…three hours of “what sign is this?” and “don’t drive drunk, kids”. The only reason I want to drive is to get out of the house so I don’t have to play video games all day. And there’s no way in hell I can get to Dave’s house without a car. My mom thinks he’s the antichrist and he’s going to get me drunk and rape me or something. Read more...Collapse )

Writing prompts! This is better than having a list of prompts, since it's more like an assignment and, therefore, I can't put it off. I hope I'm not coming off as too forward or loud... It isn't usually the case. I'm feeling a bit frantic. I also hope I'm not too late for week 1's prompt, even though it's next week? ;;;

Manic vs. SombreCollapse )

P.N.: Altruasoo. I hope to tune down on the Gry vibes. I may regret posting all this later... until then though, I hope those who read it will not spontaneously combust. As the risk is so high, maybe it's best to leave it alone..

Writing Topic - Week 1 [26 Jun 2003|07:58am]
atacuivel
[ mood | pleased ]

Hey guys!
Sorry there hasn't been a topic posted yet :\ I made this community just before I left on vacation for two weeks... so it kinda got lost. But now I'm back and soon there will be more topics than you can handle... so let's jump right in with this week's topic!

Assignment:
Write about a meeting between two characters, one who is outgoing and lively and one who is withdrawn and shy. Write in third person or from the POV of one of the characters. What are their first impressions? Do they ignore each other? Hit it off right away? Grow slowly to like each other? Hate each other? What traits does each of them have to make them interact this way?
Possible first lines of prose, to jog your imagination:
I woke up to a dripping faucet and the sounds of traffic outside my window, harboring no suspicion that this was to be perhaps the strangest day of my life.
[Name] ascended the worn stone steps to the DMV, clenching a ticket in his/her hand. "Another speeding ticket... just what I need," he/she thought, absently crushing it in his/her hand.

That's it! Remember you can write in prose, poetry, script format, dialogue, or anything else you can think of. If your piece becomes very long, please use the < lj-cut > tags (see this community's userinfo for a link to info on the use of these) to shorten the entry. I suggest leaving the first few lines of your piece uncut so that people get an idea of what you've written. And don't be shy to give constructive criticism and compliments on pieces!
This was my first stab at a topic of this kind... if you like, please comment on this entry and tell me if it was useful to you. Was it what you expected? Did it give you ideas? Should I be more specific? Less? Should I provide first lines in other formats? None at all? If you tell me what you think of the topics, I'll be better able to provide ones that will help you get some ideas on what to write. Thanks!

Hi everyone, I'm Samantha and brand new to the community. I'm in the process of writing a novel and want to do a bit of different writing on a weekly/daily basis but don't have a place to do it to get feedback until I found this community.

Ok, I'm ready to write... what's the weeks topic?
